A small test I did today using Blender's fluid simulator developed by Nils Thurey.
The setup on the left uses a domain, a moving cube (obstacle) and a spherical source (inflow).
A still rendered with ambient occlusion.

A still rendered with SSS and glow that was added using the blender's internal video sequence editor.

Overall I am very happy with this test and the next step is to learn
the advanced features like using tracer particles and
controlling the simulation using fluidsim IPO curves.
